Personal Training

Strong people are harder to kill than weak people, and more useful in general. - Mark Rippetoe

Tacoma Strength - Training Agreement

Interested in some personal training with us?

Our primary concern is to address mechanical needs, build base-line strength, and tackle lifestyle factors such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, and stress. This is a holistic training approach which deliberately addresses your life outside of the gym. We get you moving well, get you stronger, and help with all the external stuff. That’s a solid foundation, one you can build any athletic or life goals on.

Here is who it’s for

  • If you’ve never really trained for strength and fitness before, but you see a need to get started. This is the best place to start.
  • If you’ve set some ambitious performance goals recently. Get your mechanics right and build a strength base to maximize your future training.
  • If you’ve been exercising for a while now and feeling burnt out and tired of being hurt. This is a chance to reset.

Here’s how it works

  • First you’ll read the service description on this page.
  • Then you’ll be directed to review the Training Agreement, which is something you’ll be asked to sign in person if you decide to entrust your training to us.
  • After reading through it, if it looks like something you can agree to, then you can complete the Personal Training Questionnaire (PTQ). This helps the trainer get a feel for who you are and what your goals are before first meeting.
  • After you finish the PTQ, we’ll contact you to set up an Initial Assessment meeting. At the meeting, we’ll follow up on the questionnaire, talk expectations and goals, and conduct a movement screen. This meeting is not a sales pitch, we assume if you took the trouble to get this far, you’re serious.
  • Decide whether to sign up by the time we schedule the second meeting.

After this initial assessment stage, we’ll build a training regimen for you. The program will have some or all of the following elements:

  • Weekly face to face check-in
  • Twice a week gym-based training plan
  • At-home/off-site plan
  • Food/Sleep/Stress/Exercise journal
  • Goal setting
  • Nutrition coaching (1)
  • Homework (Could be mobility work or reading a book recommended by your trainer)
  • Remote (email, text, phone, whatever you like) check-in

With training plan in hand it’s time to get to work. We provide several windows of opportunity to come in. You’ll register online ahead of time, then show up ready to train.

A couple of notes about your in-gym training

In order to get the best results from your training, you need some skin in the game. You need to be responsible for most of what you do in the gym and out. We want to coach you, not hold your hand.

With that in mind, when you come in, there will always be a coach to assist you, but it may not be your primary coach and you may not be the only person they’re working with. You won’t have 100% of the trainer’s attention 100% of the time. This may seem counter-intuitive, but you’ll get more out of it if you’re forced to work independently at times.

Each week you’ll meet face to face with your trainer to check in about mini-goals, talk food, take new measurements, assessments, etc.

And so it’ll go until the end of your training cycles. Our training cycles go in three month increments.
